Send Holiday Mail for Heroes | News
HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE)-
Local Red Cross officials say last year, Kentucky sent more cards than any other state, and they're looking to do the same thing this year.
Many families send out cards to loved ones during the holidays, but Director Whitney Wardrip and the rest of the Midwest Kentucky Red Cross Chapter say they want to include the military on their list.
"It's just a simple way for us to give back to them to show them our appreciation, especially this time of year, with so many men and women deployed overseas," Wardrip said.
Wardrip says their effort last year locally was a main reason why the state ranked number one nationally in this annual campaign.
"Our region here locally was the number one in the country as well and so I've already sent out 3,000 cards so far this year. I'm hoping to hit 10,000 before the holidays are over," Wardrip said.
The Red Cross is encouraging different organizations or individuals to participate, and the Madisonville Community College Lions Club is one local group that's helping out.
"This is something small that we can give back to our community," said Mary Stewart, the MCC Lions Club President.
On Tuesday, the group helped pass out cards to students interested in sending a card to the troops.
"Everyone has a family member either a son, daughter, a cousin, a husband, a wire that is involved in the military and this is something that we can do to pick them up," Stewart said.
Over the next few weeks, the cards will be sent to military hospitals and soliders overseas. Wardrip says even though the solider probably doesn't know the person who sent the card, it's still a sign of encouragement that goes a long way.
"I've had so many men and women who have come back from deployments who have called me or come by the office to thank us," Wardrip said.
Local officials would like to have all the cards in by the end of November.
