Agreement reached to make new Muhlenberg Co. park a reality | News
MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE)- An agreement has been reached on a 250 acre Master Park in Muhlenberg County.
Officials say it's going to be located right behind the west campus high school.
Right now, there's no centralized county park in Muhlenberg County, and this project is set to change the way the youth of the area play organized sports.
Not too long ago, Tommy Barton took control of a parks department that wasn't much of anything a few years ago. After a survey, Barton found out what everyone wants more youth program organization.
"We hope to unify this, that, you know, for any youth sport you can come to the park district and know how to get involved," Barton said.
But before kids can sign up, this Master Park needs to be built. Thanks to funding from the Felix Martin Foundation, the first phase includes a five field baseball and softball complex estimated to cost about $3.5 million.
"The overall plan is to make a complex big enough to house a county wide program so we compete with the other counties," Barton told 14 News.
"They need a place where they can go and enjoy themselves and they need their own facilities and it might keep them out of trouble," said resident Ordria Willis.
Willis, a local substitute teacher, says this would be a big improvement over some of the other parks across the different communities.
"They are small and there's not very much for them to do there," said Willis. "It's just enough for the little kids."
The school district will also have access to the park for gym classes and much more.
"There is a plan to build an outdoor classroom on top of the hill here for their stem studies, for biology, nature studies," said Barton.
Along with youth leagues and school access, Barton says the later phases will include facilities such as an amphitheater, a disc golf course, and a dog park.
Construction is set to begin on the park this Spring and they hope to have phase one finished by 2014.
