Hopkins County Central graduates threw a wrench into the normal graduation ceremony this past week.  Most likely the last time many will see each other, the new graduates chose to go out in style.  Watch the above video to see what happened!

Best friends now valedictorians

Of the record sixty students graduating from Dawson Springs high school May 17, two valedictorians have been chosen to represent their class. 

Ryan Caudill and McCade Freeman have been best friends since 8th grade.  They both plan on studying engineering at the University of Kentucky, and, not to mention, they will also be college rommates.

"We compete a lot even though we don't really say we do, I know we do,"  Caudill stated.  "We just push each other to do better on tests and always want to beat each other in everything we do."

In Monday's Madisonville City Council meeting, Ray Wyatt was sworn in as the new assistant fire chief for the Madisonville Fire Department.  Wyatt's promotion comes on the eve of John Stewart's retirement last week from the force. 

Wyatt has been with the department since 1991. 

Stewart's retirement comes after 22 years of service, and he will now move to Louisville to pursue other ventures.

Randy Adams has been selected as the new band director for Madisonville North Hopkins High School.  He has been associate director of bands and director of the percussion ensemble at MNHHS for the past 17 years. During that time, he also served as band director at Browning Springs Middle School.

“I’m honored and humbled to be chosen as the head director,” Adams said. “I’m looking forward to working with the directors and the staff, students, the Boosters and administration in a team effort to keep the tradition of excellence continuing in the Madisonville North Hopkins High School Band Program.”

Adams earned a bachelor’s degree in music education (instrumental track) and a master’s degree in music education, both from Murray State University.

Kentucky State Police Detective Dan Morck was one of four nominees named for The International Association of Chiefs of Police Trooper of the Year Award at the IACP gathering in New Orleans recently.

Det. Morck was nominated for his efforts to combat child exploitation.  Throughout 2012, he has worked on numerous cases involving child pornography and suspected sexual predators.  These investigations have resulted in charges against a number of individuals living and working in proximity to young children.

The Madisonville Lions Club has announced the winners of the 2012 Man and Woman of the Year awards, an honor presented since 1945 to recognize local citizens for their civic contributions to the community.

Hopkins Co. superintendent set to retire

Hopkins Co. superintendent set to retire

James L. Stevens, superintendent of Hopkins County Schools, announced to principals and district-level administrators today that he plans to retire no later than June 30, 2013.  Stevens has been superintendent since September 2000. His 45-year career in education includes 42 years in Hopkins County as a teacher; coach; principal at Waddill Elementary School, South Hopkins High School and Madisonville North Hopkins High School; and assistant superintendent for facilities and safety.

“I’m very appreciative of the students I’ve had,” Stevens said.”I think I’ve touched a lot of lives during my career, including students, employees, parents and community members.”
