Hopkins Co. Schools announce first female superintendent

 

A new era for Hopkins County Schools was announced on Friday.

Linda Zellich was named the district's first female superintendent. Zellich began her career as an elementary teacher in Hopkins County and is currently deputy superintendent.

"We have to involve ourselves more in the lives of our community and I think you'll see more visibility of our staff at community functions. We're going to take our education system out to the people," Zellich told 14 News.

She will assume her new duties effective July 1st.

 Hopkins County Schools is accepting nominations for the Teacher of the Year and Employee of the Year awards.

Those nominated for teaching awards must have three years of teaching experience. The awards are given for elementary, middle and high school levels. Categories for Employee of the Year include administrator, classified instructional assistant, facilities management, food service and secretary.

The Hopkins County Board of Education is moving forward in its quest to appoint a new superintendent for Hopkins County Schools. The screening committee presented a short list of finalists to the board. The finalists include:

·         Rob Clayton Principal, South Oldham Middle School, Crestwood, KY

·         Matthew Constant Assistant Superintendent, Owensboro Public Schools, Owensboro, KY

·         Rita Cook Superintendent, Middlesboro Independent Public Schools, Middlesboro, KY

·         Linda Zellich Deputy Superintendent, Hopkins County Public Schools, Madisonville, KY

MCC to offer online dual credit opportunities

MCC to offer online dual credit opportunities

 

Beginning this fall, Madisonville Community College (MCC), through it Pathways to College program, will offer high school students with qualifying ACT scores the opportunity to select from the college’s extensive list of on-line courses to earn dual credit. Students taking advantage of this opportunity will earn high school and college credit for completion of the college course. The tuition for these courses will be reduced 50% to approximately $216 for a typical 3 credit hour class. Students will be expected to purchase the required course textbook.

New band director at Madisonville North Hopkins is familiar face

 

Randy Adams has been selected as the new band director for Madisonville North Hopkins High School.  He has been associate director of bands and director of the percussion ensemble at MNHHS for the past 17 years. During that time, he also served as band director at Browning Springs Middle School.

“I’m honored and humbled to be chosen as the head director,” Adams said. “I’m looking forward to working with the directors and the staff, students, the Boosters and administration in a team effort to keep the tradition of excellence continuing in the Madisonville North Hopkins High School Band Program.”

Adams earned a bachelor’s degree in music education (instrumental track) and a master’s degree in music education, both from Murray State University.

Pride Elementary School is asking community members for their votes in an online Facebook competition through Seeds of Change: Share the Good.

Prizes include 15 organic gardening grants valued at $10,000, and a grand prize of $25,000.

Bully Proof Program creator Brooks Gibbs will give a presentation for parents at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, at Browning Springs Middle School. Everyone is invited.

Gibbs, who will speak to BSMS students and staff during sessions earlier in the day, will share his insights on bullying. He has pioneered easy and effective methods to teach victims of bullying the skills they need not just to thrive, but to thrive.
